Picking your aesthetic and DIY Pillows to match!

These days, bedroom aesthetic is a big thing. I think that YouTube and the popular influencers have a lot to do with it because they always show off their bedrooms or their houses etc. I know that I fell in love with the black & white horizontal stripes, gold, marble, and faux fur thing after seeing a YouTube video of someone’s makeup room that had a white marble desk top, faux fur blanket throw blanket over the chair at the desk, and all metals for almost everything (pen holder, stapler, makeup brush cup, picture frames, book ends, etc) in gold, silver, bronze, and rose gold. The Sephora bags at the top of her tall cube organizers for decoration/storage is what helped bring the black and white stripe love to me. Number 1: I LOVE makeup, although I don’t do it every day, and Sephora sells makeup (duhh) so the bag brings me warm fuzzies of adding to my collection. (I like Ulta too but the orange.. I can’t get with) Number 2: I make bibs and skirts and hair bows for little girls and I always kept thinking of a Valentine’s Day inspired “outfit” of a black and white stripe skirt, black onesie, and a black and white striped bib with different shades of pink lips all over it and the hair bow or headband to match. That was a lot of explaing just to say that the idea of the stripes just kept growing on me more and more. Number 3: the last thing… I have always had a love of the color turquoise and its various shades (turquoise, teal, aqua etc…) black and white stripes are perfect to go along with that and not be “too much”.

My current living situation is a little bit messy. My son and I basically share a studio apartment. The bedroom houses me, him, and my office space. When I first thought about ever decorating my room it was MY room and only mine lol. When We moved here, the space has of course 4 walls (duhh again) but I occupy 3 of them, leaving one of them to be decorated for him. Since there are 2 “accent walls” in my room I had no idea what I was going to do. One wall is that god awful wood paneling where as the REAL accent wall is a beautiful gray color. PERFECT, I played with the gray into the theme. I have a comforter that is reversible. One side the same gray (imagine that!) and the other side, my black to match my theme from the first time (black bedding with aqua, gold, and black & white strip accents).

My bed is a queen size and is really big in this room. I placed it long-ways against the smaller of the white walls in the room which made my “headboard” area the hideous wood panel wall (sigh). Along this wood panel wall is now, my headboard area of my bed, my makeup storage, my bedside 3 cube storage unit, my only lamp, my faux fur topped stool, my vanity mirror, my “vanity”, and some shelves for storage. My makeup storage top is faux marble, you can find my DIY for that right HERE. My cube storage will soon match (as soon as I can find my roll of marble contact paper in one of these boxes that I havent gotten to yet). I like the small amounts of marble while we are in a shared bedroom, in the future, I will have more things. I have a white faux fur rug that I was able to score at Marshalls for like $8 (that is small like a bath mat) on the floor in front of my bed where my feet touch as I sit up in the bed to stand up.

*PAUSE*

Did I mention the carpet in the room is navy blue.. and flat, and uncomfortable, and gross… also doesn’t match.. SO, I plan to get a large area rug that is gray to match the other things going on. My mom has one that I like, I need to see where she got it from.

Now back to the story of the set up.. I have a gallery wall above the bed, on the wall the length of the bed is on (This is a tutorial soon to come). I wont tell much about it, you have to wait and see! LOL! So FINALLY we get down to the pillows… Did it take long enough?? I keep 6 sleeping pillows on my bed at all times either black or white or gray pillow cases depending on what side of the comforter I have facing up (gray or white with the black side, black with the gray side). I keep a throw blanket on my bed that I got at Hobby Lobby when their Christmas/Winter stuff was on sale at the beginning of this year. It is.. well you will see it in the photos. I also got 3 of the pillow cases from Hobby Lobby. In the fabric section, they have the large rolls for upholstery and also in this section they have pillow cases that you just buy pillow forms for. I got 2 gold sequins and one large white faux fur to match the hair pin stool that has the faux fur on top… that I think I got from T.J. Maxx. I was gifted a rectangular black crushed velvet pillow that has black feather boa style trim. I also keep my original aqua comforter folded at the bottom of the bed because I get cold.. sometimes also I nap on top of my made bed with it.. LOL innovative or lazy? ANYWAYS, it took me a whole 30 minutes to type all of that.. here is where I tell you that it is time to get into the tutorial about the ONE throw pillow that I made to match. (I will also be making 3-5 more pillows and will eventually update this post with a final photo of the finished set up… I LOVE THROW PILLOWS)

DIY Throw Pillow

(I used a sewing machine but you could also do this by hand.)
You will need:
1. A pillow form
2. Enough fabric (of your choice) to fit around the pillow form
3. Scissors
4. Thread to match the fabric
5. A sewing machine (or a needle)
6. Sewing pins to hold fabric in place
7. A glass of wine or hard liquor (optional)

My fabric was pre-cut for a different project that I never did and no longer had the desire to do so I used my cutting mat and my rotary blade to cut my fabric down. I forgot to take a picture before I started so here is what I took of the beginning of my son’s pillow.

IMG_6425

First, I guess you would purchase the pillow form at the same time as you purchase your fabric to have it measured to the right amount. Since I already have the fabric and the pillow forms I obviously didn’t do that. If I would have done it that way I would be able to skip what I am about to say…

img_6430.jpg

I went ahead and checked the measurements of my pillow form that I had on hand. My pillow form was 14×14 and my son’s was 16×20. For him, I used those “fat quarters” that you can get from Wal-Mart (Which is where they came from) or the craft stores sell them that way or in rolls of multiple fat quarters that would be enough for a quilt. For myself, I went with a black and white stripe that has gold polka dots all over it from Hobby Lobby. For my son we went with a reversible theme, one side bicycles and one side blue. This matches his bedding (found here if you want to purchase it) 63cb512f-ad04-48b7-bb7f-f69b5fc35cf2_1.f3febaa94696fe8d3c28513a6f8c0af2

Since he has a sports theme, His pillows are basically representing things that are not on the blanket (volley ball, bikes, and I forgot what the other one was which I can’t find at the moment #fail).

At this point I measured the fabric out, for myself I cut the fabric folded in half so that it was 16×16. YES, I over-measured. The pillow form has to fit inside and I gave myself at least 1 inch extra to make the seam. For Jay’s pillow, I didn’t measure or cut LOL, I have been working with sewing, quilting, clothes making etc for 6 years so I am pretty used to being able to alter 18×21 down to 16×20 while I work. I went ahead and pinned the fabric together in place with the patterns touching each other and the underside facing out (so that it can be flipped right-side out after sewing). **PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE GETTING THE FABRIC CUT THE WAY YOU WANT THE PATTERN TO APPEAR ON THE PILLOW. What I mean here is: let’s say you are using my stripe pattern on a rectangular pillow form. If you want the stripes to be horizontal, make sure that you have enough fabric for the pillow to be covered long-ways with the stripes horizontal. I always have to get extra fabric when I buy the stripes because when you open up the piece you buy, the width is shorter with the stripes horizontal than it is if you want them vertical and just buy a yard or half a yard etc. I hope that makes sense for you and helps. **

IMG_6423

I went ahead and started sewing then thought about taking the picture. This is after I have finished almost one whole side. For this pillow, I need to only sew 3 sides total since I want my stripes horizontal (If your form was square too and you wanted it vertical you would still actually only sew 3 sides OOPS sorry). If it was a rectangular pillow form, the location of this fold would really REALLY matter.

Sew 2 sides of the pillow completely. Next, Flip the pillow cover right side out and add the form into the pillow cover. Pin the pillow cover with the loose ends inwards like in the photo here:

IMG_6424

This will leave clean edges! Go ahead and sew this up.. the stitch is really up to you especially if you are sewing by hand. THEN, you are done! either remove the pins as you go or take them all out after!

IMG_6428
There is my blanket.. and some of my gallery wall.. OOPS, QUICK! Look away! lol

Style any way you want to! My son was asleep so I couldn’t show his bed but you get the idea. Check back later down here at the bottom for the updated photo once I make the other pillows and add them in! For Christmas, I have a rectangular white pillow with gold trim that say FaLaLa that I can’t wait to add! Have a great day #StayCrafty!

Keeping Organized During a Move

So, I am crafty, I am great with computer “stuff” but sometimes I am lazy. When we decided to move, I had the brilliant idea to get a binder together to keep everything organized and make it easy for us to move. I tried to creat my own thing and almost immediately I was bored and frustrated and took to Etsy.com to find someone who had already prepared one. I came across PaperMousePlanners and her layouts were absolutely ADORABLE! I purchased the Instant Download Moving Planner shown in the photo below.

il_570xN.1252975065_6w0j

Everything worked perfectly for us. There were box labels which I eneded up printing like a million sheets of and pages to help you know what is in each box and take inventory and… words just cant describe how helpful this binder was. I was able to have a place for all the houses I wanted to look at, create pro and con type of lists, have a list of items I was selling, have a sheet protector inserted into the binder to hold receipts and contracts and so much more. I even went on pinterest and found blogs offering free printables to help me organize certain things (like the pantry items and LEGOS) when we got here to the new place. A big thank you to Milou Sanders of PaperMousePlanners for creating these amazing inserts! She really does a great job. When I went to her page tonight to get the link for the printables, I found a bunch of other things that I plan on purchasing in the near future… like next week to be exact.. maybe even tonight LOL! I am the queen of midnight shopping. Below I will link some of things that I like from her shop that I plan on purchasing with a hyperlink above them for each. Happy Shopping!

Christmas 2016

FullSizeRender (3)

The photo above is my son in Savannah, GA at the hotel we stayed in on the way to Florida. So since its almost that time again and we are planning what to do for Christmas this year, I wanted to talk about what happened last year. For Christmas 2016, we spent 5 days in paradise! We drove from High Point, NC to Cocoa Beach, FL but not before stopping in Orange County. There is a small town called Christmas, FL and it was absolutely adorable!

We have family in Melbourne, FL. However, I under estimated the proximity of Cocoa Beach and Melbourne. LOL, although they are like 30-45 minutes apart, I thought they were closer and booked our hotel BEACH-FRONT for the 4 nights. It was the nicest place and as a  Hilton employee, at the time, I had secured the room at an amazing rate! We were able to spend some time at the outdoor deck/bar/pool/lounge area that had private access to the beach. The deck was huge with lounge seating, fire pits and heaters, the pool and children’s splash pad, and the bar with outdoor seating for food service. We literally spent every night there. We took some time to go to the beach even though the water was FREEZING! On Christmas Eve, we got up super early and made our way to the beach to watch one of the most amazing things that I have ever seen… SURFING SANTAS! It was insane. There were 100s of men and women dressed as santa in the water surfing all at the same time and from all over the world! These photos were taken by the local paper. The crowd was massive! While there were a lot of drones in the air taking photos and footage, I was unable to locate a photo from 2016 that was able to show the entire beach.. they were all from 2015.

We spent Christmas Eve night in Melbourne where we went to a local golf course that had set up a drive through Christmas display. There were lights and blow up figures, wooden figures, wire and light wrapped figures.. it was so cute but took ABSOLUTELY FOREVER to get through. We listened to Christmas music the whole way. Is now a good time to mention how I HATE Christmas music? LOL! Overall, we had an amazing time and returned to Melbourne Christmas Day to celebrate with my grandparents in their home.

Orlando-Florida-Wants-Marketing-Agency-1024x341

The day after Christmas, we drove an hour up to Orlando to go to The Florida Mall. When we were planning things to do in Florida during our trip, I found that there were a lot of cute museums and things to do but we were so happy to be in the 80 degree weather and be outside in summer clothes in December that we did not end up doing half of the things that I found. One thing that I did find was The Crayola Experience. The Florida Mall houses the building and it is HUGE! I was looking around on Groupon and was able to purchase the 4 tickets that I needed and the best part was that you could use them when ever you wanted and not on any specific day! We left early in the morning to get there by the time they opened. We were in there for hours. Crayola did a great job on that place. My only complaint was that there were a few things that were out of order and upon reading reviews afterwards.. this was a re-occuring thing. It didnt matter! We had a great time and the gift shop… wow! There is a photo I will insert of the WALL OF CRAYONS AND MARKERS that are in every color that is currently out. They do retire colors which I was unaware of.. so a few colors that I knew growing up were not there but it didnt make a difference. For $20 we purchased a tin bucket with a handle (kind of like a paint bucket) that fit every single crayon and marker plus more! So that is what we did, got every single color plus extras of the ones that we really liked and that we knew we would use a lot of (yes I am 27 and still color). Here are the photos of The Crayola Experience. I did come to find when making this post that a lot of footage that I had taken from the trip is lost somewhere and I am still actively searching for it (The huge tree in the hotel in FL, christmas photos, hotel deck photos, beach photos.. etc). Enjoy!

c700x420

The last photo above is the crayon wall as mentioned! We are thinking of going back to Florida this year for Christmas again. I must say, from not being a FLorida resident and not having to be there all year and withstand the temperatures etc, I truely felt like we were in paradise! I have fallen in love with sandmen in place of snowmen and leaving Santa cookies and cold lemonade. I would recommend everyone experience Christmas in Florida at least once in their lives! As for now, Happy Fall! Enjoy the upcoming holidays, then, let me know how you spend your Christmas this year or how you have spent them in the past that were most memorable! I will continue to search for the other photos and try to add them in here at the bottom if I find them.

I would very much appreciate them to hire someone to select different movies seeing as how there are half a million Halloween movies. There are as many children’s movies as there are scary as shit adult movies. Like what happened to them playing Casper? Alice in Wonderland is most definitely NOT a Halloween movie along with Men in Black, Monsters, Inc and Monsters University. They could play Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Monster House… I could go on but I am still excited to see Sleepy Hollow because that is the only one of these movies that I do not physically own. I believe I found myself feeling the same way last year… maybe I should write them a letter? LOL.

HAPPY SPOOKY SEASON YALL!

DIY Party Decor

My event planning company has a 60th birthday to do soon. I did some research and found out that the 60th birthday is the “golden birthday”. The decor for the cake table includes a 6 and a 0 that is made of the same cardboard like material as the box that I used for the card box previously. We decided to go with the gold glitter (even though it is a man’s party) because it stands out better than the gold metalic paint. The shine is perfect.

I used three different types of glitters in my glitter mix.

IMG_5768

The numbers came from Hobby Lobby as well as the large chunky glitter. The Recollections and other bottle are both from Michael’s craft store. The middle bottle is more of a bronze-ish type of color and not really gold but it blended really nicely with the other two. You really dont want to have just the one chunky glitter or just the one extra-fine glitter because it brings layers and makes the project look better. In my opinion any way.

I make the glitter mix with a 16oz solo cup and a small “bathroom cup” (or shot glass size) plastic cup, glossy mod podge, and the three glitters.

  1. I pour the amount of mod podge into the 16oz solo cup that I think will be enough for the project.
  2. In the bathroom cup, I only want to fill it half way. SO, I take 1/3 of each color glitter until the cup is halfway full. I put the extra-fine glitters on the bottom and the chunky glitter on the top so that when poured into the mod podge, the chunky glitter will end up at the bottom of the mix and not take over the entire mixture by sitting on the top.
  3. I stirred the mixture with an old pencil because I couldnt find a craft stick to save my life. (LOL)
  4. I use a sponge brush to paint the glue mixture on to the numbers because it doesnt soak up the product like the paint brushes do.

IMG_5767

Pardon the chewed up scissors in the background. I had some help with my project and she got ahold of them without me noticing obviously until it was too late.

IMG_5769

Long story short.. you adde a layer of the glitter mix until you have covered the places you want to be glittery and then let it dry. The first layer dries the fastest. It takes seconds… maybe 3 minutes at the most to dry. Every layer afterwards will take just a little longer to dry. You must make sure to let the layers dry before painting on the next one because if you do not, the glue will stay wet underneath and create bubbles that can be popped accidentally and then the wet glue will go all over and there will be a crater in it’s place.

IMG_5765

After you think you have enough layers on, you can go ahead and let it dry and at this point, I add another coat of gloss. I use Polycrylic. This not only seals the mod podge but it makes it so that water or any other elements can not damage the numbers.

**a lot of youtubers and DIY people will tell you to put down a layer of mod podge and then sprinkle glitter and then cover with another layer of mod podge. I dont subscribe to this method. It is much cleaner and smoother to mix the glitter into the mod podge before painting it on.

IMG_5766

These are my numbers still in the process of curing. I will post a photo to this blog post after the party with what they look like all set up! Have a great day!

Trying to Grow

Recently, I have been learning a lot about how to grow my blog and how to help raise money to take care of my son as well as myself. One thing that someone suggested to me was Patreon. I met her on youtube. She told me that the thing that she uses to help pay for her supplies is her fans on Patreon send donations. She told me that I should give it a try and see how it works out. I was never sure about the crowd funding thing and was a little unsure about signing up… but i figured I would give it a go. I have created a patreon account and it just launched today!

https://www.patreon.com/crafting4aliving

That is my page link above. I am sure you have noticed my amazon links on some posts, I am also aware that some of the “click here” links are not properly functioning. I do apologize. Those are my affiliate links. I would appreciate it if you wanted to purchase anything that I have linked on my blog if you used my affiliate link. I get 10% commission on what ever it is that you purchase and it is of no extra charge to you. It helps my family out!

I have created a facebook group where I would like to add my followers to gain friends, to teach you how to do things as far as crafts and DIYs, and to just get to know people from all over. To be added to my facebook group, the requirement is $1 patreon donation. HOWEVER, if you are a user of my amazon affiliate links or you share around my amazon affiliate link (by copying the link to one of the products) and it is used please contact me and let me know that you have done so and I can add you into the facebook group as well. There is no reason to leave you out!

I appreciate all of my readers whether you make donations or not! Thank you for your time! I love sharing my stories and projects with you!

Urban Decay- Naked Heat

OMG OMG OMG! So I have been under a rock for a couple weeks I guess. I forgot all about the Urban Decay release. *sigh* So I am here today to talk about this >>NEW<< palette and show the photos that I have gracefully swiped off of Urban Decay’s website. I am obsessed with this palette and I can not wait for them to be off of backorder!!!! I love Urban Decay and the fact that they are cruelty free. I think that when I look back at all the makeup I have purchased.. Urban Decay was my first “high-end” makeup brand that I ever purchased from. I know that some people don’t like the Naked palettes but I am a fan, I have NEVER had an issue with them. OH WAIT… I did have one issue and I was a little upset but at the end of the day I convinced myself that in some way it was Ulta’s fault even though it wasn’t. I purchased the Naked 3 palette and one of my pans in the palette of one of my favorite shades was loose and pops out of the palette sometimes. I am an adult, it was my choice to keep it when I noticed this issue.. so if it’s anyone’s fault it is mine for not taking it back. But oh well right? It only comes out if I drop my palette on my vanity or counter top or something which I make a conscious effort not to do anyway. The shadows are not damaged.. i just need to through some glue on the back and end the issue all together!

LOOK HOW GORGEOUS THESE COLORS ARE?!

I am so in love with these colors ❤ I am so happy that Urban Decay decided to go a different direction with their next Naked palette. I was not a fan of the Naked palette or Naked 2 but I absolutely LOVE the Naked 3 palette and I know that my opinion is not a popular one and a lot of people hated that palette but I feel like Naked and Naked 2 were too similar for me. Anyways, I am someone who collects makeup more than I wear it because I have basically always been a collector of sorts and I am mostly SUPER lazy in the morning. Some days my work hours consist or 4am-1pm (LOL) in the blazing kitchen heat and I am in no way shape or form about to be up at 3am caking my face with makeup to go sweat it off all day and waste all the product. This basically leads to me barely ever wearing makeup. But this Urban Decay palette is burning a hole into my wallet I promise you! I am trying so hard to get these Shopkick points popping so I can get the $25 gift card for Sephora. If you don’t know what Shopkick is, I will be doing a blog post that will actually post right after this one that tells ALL ABOUT IT! Let’s see some more photos of the palette to drool over.. shall we?

3605971553936_naked_heat_alt1

The packaging is pretty nice too. I have physically held this in store and I was impressed. I would have liked for it to be the similar metal as the Naked 3 but I think that I like the way that each palette has a different type of packaging. The colors are absolutely amazing and the pigment is on point with only a little fall out but at the end of the day, if you cant admit that your beautifully pigmented shadow has fallout.. you are a liar. LOL! To be honest, I have never had an eye shadow that has beautiful colors that provide full coverage that had no fall out. I have had shadows that barely had any pigment and looked amazing in the pan that had no fall out but when you actually applied them… it was like you put nothing on your eyes.. just a million layers of see through something.

3605971553936_naked_heat_alt2

Let’s take a moment and talk about the color names. I am going to pull the list for you now. The website calls them “12 ALL-NEW, can’t-live-without, amber-hued neutrals—including warm browns, burnt oranges and rich siennas.” These are the shades in order as they appear (left to right) in the palette:

OUNCE (ivory shimmer)
CHASER (light nude matte)
SAUCED (soft terra-cotta matte)
LOW BLOW (brown matte)
LUMBRE (copper shimmer w/gold pearl shift)
HE DEVIL (burnt red matte)
DIRTY TALK (metallic burnt red)
SCORCHED (metallic deep red w/gold micro-shimmer)
CAYENNE (deep terra-cotta matte)
EN FUEGO (burgundy matte)
ASHES (deep reddish-brown matte)
EMBER (deep metallic copper-burgundy)

3605971553936_naked_heat

I can say that one thing I am disappointed with is this far shade called “Ashes”. In a lot of the product release photos that I had come across on Instagram and Facebook and even a few people on Youtube that posted about it, the shade that held the place in the palette where “Ashes” is appeared to be a deep plum purple and I was so excited for that. BUT, as luck would have it, the shade is not. I can only blame Instagram filters for this error in thought. I think a shade similar to this text color (for those reading from a computer who can see the color) would have fit nicely. Something similar to their shade “Ether”. That would have been perfect! Anyways… Thanks for joining me as I drooled over these photos and impatiently await the re-stock. Have a great day!
